Despite his exploits in the international boxing arena, former European Middleweight Champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman is still the most underrated boxer locally. Nevertheless, he has sprung quite a few surprises, holding his own against Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis, Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy and ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton among some of the best in the local arena.
Apparently, some of the ambitious youngsters refuse to be impressed and continue to issue challenges while regarding him as a stepping stone to international accomplishments.
The latest fighter to ‘eyepass’ the former European champion and issued a challenge is Mark Austin. Sporting the sobriquet, ‘The People’s Choice,’ Austin is scheduled to clash with Eastman in the main supporting bout of the 29th Edition of Guyana Fight Night under the auspices of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), August 3 next.
The main bout of the card also pits the skill of Barbadian, Shurwyne ‘The Mauler’ Marshall against Clive Atwell in an 8 rounds Lightweight contest while Jnr/Lightweight pugilist, Anson Green, will be anxious to resume his winning ways after suffering a lopsided point’s decision loss to Laured Stewart in his last outing.
He opposes Berbician, Richard Williamson over 4 rounds while Eversley Brown will also be anxious to redeem himself following a loss to Romeo Norville in his last fight; he opposes Laured Stewart in a 4 rounds Jnr/Middleweight affair. The latter boxer will face Anson Green in a 4 rounds lightweight shindig and would want to bolster his debut success.
Most of the boxers convened at Avenue of the Republic offices of Abdool and Abdools Insurance Brokers and affixed their respective signatures on their contracts, under the direction of GBBC official, Clairmont DeSouza.
Atwell was uncharacteristically garrulous and promised his fans that he will continue his winning ways. He said that he was unable to peruse Marshal’s records but is aware that the Barbadian had surrendered decisions to Iwan Azore and Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore in earlier fights.
“That is of no consequence to me because I am on a mission to eliminate any stumbling blocks in my way and will just go out there and work my plan,” a confident Atwell declared.
Eastman and Austin also exchanged light banter with the latter pugilist earning the most points in this ‘first round.’
“The kid is an up and coming fighter with a lot of potential but he will have to come with his ‘A’ Game plan if he wants to get past me,” warned Eastman. For his part Austin simply said, “Eastman is a very good fighter but come fight night I will turn in my best performance and will win this one.” Mr. DeSouza said that the organisers have carefully put together the card and fans could be assured of action packed encounters.
Earlier, DeSouza’s colleague, Eon Jardine, had promised that fans could look forward to an exciting card since all of the boxers have already begun training.
Tickets will go on sale soon and a ringside seat is $1500 while stands are $1000.
