The Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic IV yesterday continued to receive support from the corporate community when YK Investment Pawn Shop invested in the prestigious athletics meet for a fourth consecutive year, rejoining a group of notable sponsors.
The fourth Boyce & Jefford Classic was officially launched last week where details to host the meet on August 17 at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary with Heats and three finals and August 18 at the MSC Ground, Linden with all other finals, was revealed.
Proprietor of YK Investments Pawn Shop, Harry Yenkana believed
that it is important that the business entity continue to partner with the event as it grows into what he described as “a very big sports competition for Linden and all Guyana”.
“I think this event will be very big in the future and YK wants to ensure that it is always there as we were from the beginning. Last year I was impressed that despite the rain, there were so many people there and everyone had a good time,” Yenkana said.
His son, Marlon, added that the event is attempting to do things that were never done before and perhaps those are the risks needed to develop sports. “We were eager to get back onboard, we have no problem throwing our weight behind this one-of-a-kind event,” Marlon indicated.
There will be four international races at this year’s Boyce & Jefford Classic that will attract cash prizes of $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 for first to third; plaques will accompany all the prizes in the international races that will attract Caribbean participation.
The top club will pocket $500,000 while second place gets $300,000 and third place $200,000 if they place first to third. The team that places fourth will get $100,000 while fifth and sixth gets $60,000 and $40,000 respectively with trophies being handed out from first to third in the Club Championships.
The Champion Male and Champion Female athletes will receive $50,000 each with trophies. The day will also see two Masters’ events, attracting cash prizes of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 for placing in that order. Overall, the meet will dole out $2.5 Million in cash and other prizes this year.
