Amidst the many challenges of lukewarm crowd support, now magnified by the decision of the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) to incorporate professional boxers into the 2014 Brazil Olympics, President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool refuses to baulk and continues to agitate for qualitative activity for local pugilists.
Consequently, in keeping with such projections, the 29th edition of Guyana Fight Night boxing card will be staged on August 3 next at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) with 4 exciting professional fights and a similar number of amateur encounters. Those pugilists that will comprise the amateur segment of the card will be released shortly after organisers of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) convene.
In the feature attraction of the professional segment, exciting multiple champion, Clive Atwell, returns after his devastating knockout victory over Barbados based Guyanese, Revlon Lake, to take on Bajan, Shurwyne ‘The Mauler’ Marshal, in an 8 rounds Lightweight contest.
Former European Middleweight Champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, will tackle Mark Austin in an 8 rounds non title affair while Jnr/Lightweight pugilist, Anson Green, on the redemption trail after a lopsided loss to Laured Stewart, opposes Berbician, Richard Williamson over 4 rounds.
Eversley Brown will also be anxious to redeem himself following a loss to Romeo Norville in his last fight, when he opposes Stewart in a 4 rounds Jnr/Middleweight affair.
The boxers will convene this afternoon at the Abdool and Abdools Insurance office, Avenue of the Republic, for the signing ceremony. Atwell recently flew into Guyana from Dominica where he does most of his training while his opponent will arrive soon.
One of the organisers, Eon Jardine, said that fans could look forward to an action packed card since all of the boxers have already begun training. The cost of a ringside seat is $1500 while stands are $1000.
