– set up return clash with Waramadong
Defending champions Wismar/Christianburg wasted no time in establishing themselves as worthy title holders after inflicting a crushing 6-1 triumph over upstarts St. George’s in semi-final action of the 2013 Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Championship which was played yesterday, at the Beterverwagting ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
They now set up a rematch with last year’s beaten finalist Waramadong,

who had to survive a stern test against underdogs Covent Garden, who recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and push the match into a penalty kicks shootout which they lost 3-0.
The eagerly anticipated Wismar/Christianburg failed to live up to expectations as the visitors took the lead in the 11th minute through Marmaleque Davidson, who reached on to a pass from the left flank, rounded the keeper, before tucking into an empty goal.
St. George’s known for their tenacity and who seems to enjoy coming from behind found the equaliser in the 28th minute through a similar play when Neil Cameron was fed a clinical pass from mid-field, outran his marker, before beating a hesitant Wismar/Christianburg goalkeeper to the ball, evaded his attempt to intercept and beat a scrambling defender with an easy pat into an empty goal.
However, two minutes later, Wismar/Christianburg regained their advantage through Donavan Francis, who headed in from a goalmouth scrimmage and stretched their lead nine minutes later when a perfect chip from Davidson landed over the head of the keeper to make it 3-1 to the visitors.
Shortly after, the rains came and as spectators were scurrying to the stand for shelter, Shane Luckie netted for Wismar/Christianburg four minutes from half time to made it 4-1 at the break and St. George’s team and fans were totally disappointed with their first half display.
On the resumption, Wismar/Christianburg continued their onslaught with Luckie and Davidson testing the St. George’s custodian with a stinging header and right footer respectively.
With the wet conditions proving testing for both teams, Jashawn Moore took full advantage as he fired in a stinging right-foot shot that the goalkeeper poorly allowed to slip past his grasp and trickle painfully over the goal-line much to the dismay of his teammates.
That goal came in the 58th minute of play.
Not satisfied with their lead, Wismar/Christianburg went on a relentless search for more goals, but errant finishes and sporadic instances of good defending and goalkeeping kept the game at 5-1, before Nigel Ceasar’s 91st minute strike ended the agony for the Georgetown champions, who despite their second-rate performance in the game should be satisfied with their overall returns.
The final and third place playoff is set to be played on Sunday, at the Police Sports Club ground where a large crowd is anticipated to turn up.
