Sentinel Security Ltd. in association with The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club on Thursday last hosted the first ever Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards ceremony at the St. Francis Training Centre.
West Indies Test player Veerasammy Permaul won the Berbice Sportsman of the Year Award while national Lawn Tennis champion Carol Humphrey was declared the Sportswoman of the Year.
The Berbice Cricket Board received the Sports Organisation of the Year award and veteran Football Organiser Neil Humphrey the Sports Personality award.
RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster whose brainchild it was to organize such a forum to recognise and honour outstanding sports performances by Berbicians, said that the Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards was historic while showering praises on Mrs. Noreen Gaskin and Sentinel Security for their sponsorship and partnership.
Recognizing the fact that Berbicians now have their own Sports Awards Scheme, Foster expressed the hope that it would inspire all sports persons to greater achievements. The awardees were chosen by a panel of judges headed by DTV-8 News Editor and Sport Administrator Gregory Rambarran. The sports organisations which submitted nominations were complimented.
Club President Keith Foster and Patron Ms. Beverley Harper both complimented the awardees and urged them to keep up their high standards while remaining positive role models to the younger generation.
Sentinel Security Ltd. representative Mr. Dexter Todd thanked the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for allowing Mrs. Noreen Gaskin the opportunity to honour her husband in a special way as he was a strong believer in youth and sports development.
The Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards, Todd stated would continue in the future and expressed confidence that it would develop into Guyana’s premier sports awards. The late Gregory Gaskin was passionate about sports especially motor racing and his widow was pleased to honour his memory by honouring outstanding sports personalities in the Ancient County.
Veerasammy Permaul made his ODI and Test debut for the West Indies in 2012 while he also captained Berbice, Guyana and West Indies ‘A’.
Ms. Carol Humphrey dominated female Lawn Tennis in Berbice and Guyana during 2012, winning several tournaments while her older sibling Neil, was honoured for his unselfish contribution to the development of Football in Berbice especially at the junior level.
The Berbice Cricket Board was regognised for a remarkable year during which it has hosted over twenty (20) tournaments and a record breaking 175 programmes/activities.
Each of the awardees received a medal, plaque and trophy and a collection of gifts. They all expressed gratitude to the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and Sentinel Security Ltd for hosting the Awards Scheme and pledged to always strive for excellence.
