Desperate for her son to be free at all cost, a 56-year-old mother resorted to threatening to kill the sister and family of the prosecution witness if they testified against her son who is charged with armed robbery.
When Suranie Rampersaud of 692 Cummings lodge, East Coast Demerara appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that she attempted to obstruct the course of justice on October 1, 2012.
According to court documents, on the day in question, the defendant telephoned the sister of the prosecution’s witness and threatened to kill her and her family if her brother testified against her son. Rampersaud was told of the offence and was subsequently arrested and charged.
Attorney at Law, Glen Hanoman, who prosecuted the case, objected to bail on the grounds that if the defendant is granted bail, it is likely that she may make further attempts to affect the outcome of her son’s trial and she may not return for her trial as well.
Bail for the defendant was refused and her matter was transferred to the court of Magistrate Fabayo Azore where it is expected to engage the court’s attention again on July 26.
