Moore, Garrett and La Rose honoured
Three outstanding Berbicians were honoured on Thursday last when the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club hosted the historic Ansa McAl Award of Excellence Programme. Honoured for outstanding services and contributions to the development of Berbice and Guyana were Carl Moore (Sports), Rosaline Garrett (Education) and Marilyn La Rose (Community Development).
Each of the awardees received a medal, trophy, plaque and a
special Ansa McAl hamper.
Managing Director of Ansa McAl (Guy) Ltd., Ms. Beverley Harper, expressed her Company’s pleasure at being able to sponsor the first major Awards programme for Berbicians, while expressing confidence that it would grow into one of Guyana’s premier awards.
Ms. Harper, who is also the Patron of the RHTY&SC, stated that the management of the Club was very visionary and the main players should be congratulated.
She also congratulated the awardees on their outstanding services to Guyana, urging them to share their vast experiences with the younger generation. RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster informed that the idea for the Ansa McAl Award of Excellence came about after the club realised that Berbice had no major award scheme to honour its own heroes and also because the National Awards Ceremony is hardly held anymore.
Members of the public and NGOs across Berbice were invited to make nominations and a panel of judges headed by veteran DTV-8 News Editor, Gregory Rambarran, selected the winners from a total of thirty-two (32) nominations.
The awards would be held on an annual basis and would be expanded next year to include Health and Youth Development.
Mr. Carl Moore has served Berbice as a cricket administrator for over thirty (30) years, fourteen (14) as the Berbice Cricket Board Secretary whilst also serving as Cricket Manager of Guyana National Team for over a decade.
Ms. Garrett served in the field of education for over sixty (60) years; ending her career as the Regional Education Officer for Region 6. Ms. La Rose, a nurse by profession, joined the New Amsterdam Lions Club in 1995 and served as its President twice; she was also elected chairperson of all Lions Club in Berbice for one term. Under her leadership, the New Amsterdam Lions Club organised many community development programmes.
