…Says police pussyfooting with investigations
Frustration is mounting as it seems that justice is a far way off for Avinash Haripersaud, who had been physically assaulted at his place of employment more than a week ago.
Haripersaud, 26, of Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown, reported that after being beaten “mafia style” by his superiors within the Princess Hotel Casino where he worked, it is unclear whether his assailants will be punished.
According to reports, following a confrontation between Haripersaud and a female employee, the two were summoned to a meeting in a supervisor’s office. One thing led to another and he got a beating.
The three men at whose hands he allegedly received a ruthless beating, were allowed to walk free since they denied having anything to do with the incident.
The session was held some four days after the beating at the Providence Police Station, East Bank Demerara, in the presence of a Sergeant Kuldit.
“They kept asking where the injury is? How come nothing is visible to their eyes?” Haripersaud told Kaieteur News. The man had been dealt repeated punches to his head, face and forearms.
He said that although he bore no visible marks of violence, the extent of his injuries was clearly stated in a medical report that he had lodged at the Station a day after he was beaten. However, those facts were not mentioned during the confrontation.
Haripersaud added that when he opted to refer to the surveillance cameras on which the episode had been recorded, the Sergeant merely requested the men to have the tape delivered to the Police Station.
“If I was the one that beat them, I would be arrested without any investigation,” Haripersaud said.
Relating the events that led up to the beating, the man said that just after signing in for his shift on the night in question, he was told by a security guard to report to the Manager’s office.
The manager had reportedly called the meeting on account of a recent dispute between Haripersaud and another female staff of the casino. The two were, as a result, given a three-day suspension. Unclear as to the conditions of the suspension, the man attempted to clarify it with the official who had handed down the penalty.
Little did he know that freedom of speech was not favored by the official, as he was then pushed and ordered to “get out” of the office.
The natural impulse of shoving off the hand that had pushed him led to the beating.
Haripersaud said that subsequent to the beating, with blood seeping down his nose, he made his way to the Providence Police station to report the matter.
A conversation yesterday with the Sergeant revealed that investigations into the matter are currently ongoing. He added that investigators are in the process of obtaining the footage of the incident.
