Guyana Amazon Warriors start encampment yesterday
By Sean Devers
The second match of the inaugural Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) t20 cricket tournament is set for the Guyana National Stadium at Providence on August 31 and already the excitement is building for local fans.
The Guyana Amazon Warriors take on defending regional t/20 champions Trinidad and Tobago’s Red Steel from 20:00 hrs and according to Guyana’s LCPL ticketing Coordinator Natasha Khan tickets for that game are being bought at a rapid rate.
The local-based players began their encampment yesterday at the Princess Hotel under Head Coach Roger Harper and will be joined by the players in the West Indian squad presently participating in the ODI series against Pakistan.
Pakistan t20 Skipper Mohammed Hafeez is expected to join the only team from South America in the competition at the end of the series against the Regional side.
Tickets for the matches in Guyana can only be purchased from the LCPL Office in Middle Street, Georgetown, Cellsmart (Digicel Outlet), Avenue of the Republic, the Cell (Digicel Outlet), New Amsterdam and the Courts Store, Main Street, Georgetown.
Khan reminded that tickets cannot be purchased from the Guyana Cricket Board Office which was previously the case for high-level cricket in Guyana. She further explained that there is no reduction in the cost of tickets for children once that child is capable of using a seat.
“There are no children tickets but once a baby, maybe up to two years of age, can sit on the lap of an adult they will not require a ticket,” Khan stated.
The ticketing official opined that tickets should be sold out for all of the three days of cricket in Guyana especially since all of the matches involving the Guyana Franchise will be played in the night under lights when most people are off work.
The Guyana Franchise will be lead by former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and includes Trinidadian off-spinner Sunil Narine who enjoyed success in India’s IPL. Hafeez is the other International player bought by the Guyana Franchise.
Trinidadian opener Lendl Simmons and wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin are other West Indies Test players in the local line-up, while New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin and his countryman, opener Martin Guptill are the other overseas International players in the Guyana Franchise.
Left-handed batsman Narsingh Deonarine and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul have also played at the highest level for the West Indies. Former West Indies fast bowling great Curtly Ambrose is the Assistant Coach to Harper.
Guyanese all-rounder Chris Barnwell who played in the IPL, Jamaican left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie, opener William Perkins, all-rounder Steven Jacobs, fast bowler Keon Joseph and baby of the Guyana Amazon Warriors team opener Trevon Griffith are all expected to provide local fans with pulsating cricket.
