– said he needed to go into his trunk for ID card
This is not the first time he tricked the police. Last year, Gopaul Tiwari, also known as “Onkar”, tricked the police into thinking that he wasn’t home. The confidence trickster did that by paying someone to put a padlock on his door daily.
However, that cannot compare to Tiwari’s latest stunt when he deceived the police into allowing him to go to his trunk for his identification card.
A mere three days after he got away from Alberttown Police Station, Tiwari, felt free enough to treat himself to viewing the cricket match between West Indies and Pakistan at the National Stadium.
Kaieteur News understands that Tiwari was spotted at the cricket in the VIP section by a police officer. The Officer alerted other ranks and four of them attempted to make the arrest. The four ranks escorted the suspect out of the crowd and into the VIP parking lot. All the while, Tiwari sought to convince them that they were “taking down an innocent man.”
Even though Tiwari was positively identified by another officer as a known confidence trickster, he managed to create enough doubt that the ranks allowed him a chance to prove that he is innocent.
Tiwari told them that the matter can be easily sorted if only he was allowed to show his identification card to verify his name. As one would only expect to happen in a comedy movie, Tiwari told the police that his documents were in the trunk of his car. All four of the ranks fell for it. They allowed him to enter the car and “pop” the trunk.
Tiwari went into the car, “pop” the trunk drove away and left all four ranks standing there. None of them thought about alerting gate security until the trickster had left.
Meanwhile, Tiwari’s latest victim remains distraught over the fleece. William Ross was swindled $698,000 which he paid Tiwari for the rental of space to open a game shop and some as a down payment for Tiwari to import some of the necessities.
Acting on advice given, Ross asked the ‘businessman’ to meet him up at a cricket match to hand over some more cash. Police who were at the scene cornered Tiwari and detained him.
According to Ross, when taken to the Alberttown Police Station, the suspect sat on a bench for about five minutes then went to a senior officer who was not stationed there.
After talking to that officer, Tiwari went over to Ross and asked the victim if he wanted his money back. Of course Ross said yes, but then Tiwari disappeared and was never to be seen by his victim since.
Ross claimed that Tiwari left with the senior Officer but the officer denied.
In March 2009, Tiwari was accused of obtaining a quantity of cash ($106,000) by pretending that he was in the position to get two men American visas and jobs when they got to the US. He was ordered to pay court costs and was placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
In October of the same year, Tiwari was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining over $400,000 from a woman under the pretext that he could import a car for her.
Subsequent to that, he was sought by the police for a series of similar incidents.
He had posed as one of the woman’s relatives and had fooled her into putting $6,000 credit in his phone.
Among the people who have identified Tiwari as the person who tricked them last year, was Mohanie Jagir. Jagir operates a wholesale and retail liquor store. She had claimed that Tiwari owes her $300,000.
She stated that Tiwari used to purchase items in bulk from her for a while and in February last; she credited him $300,000 worth in alcohol and beverages. She claimed that was the last time she saw him.
Kaieteur News understands that the con man forged his wife’s signature and robbed her of her property. That matter was in court up to last year.
