-Pacesetters are Division III winners
By Edison Jefford
‘It is never over until the fat lady sings’ and when she sang Sunday night it was Colts making the celebratory human towers at centre court after snatching victory from the jaws of defeat against a Ravens unit that fell asleep in crunch-time against the young Colts.
But it is not the first time Colts had turned seeming defeat into victory; after facing an extinctive period following the death of founding father, Phillip George two years ago, the team rebuilt the structure on youth and has cemented its place in Georgetown.
Its 69-67 victory over Ravens Sunday night in the Georgetown
Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division I playoffs was confirmation that the formidable young team has matured into a force to reckoned with after showing excellent resolve.
Guard, Dave Causway led with 17 points, while shooting guard Shelroy Thomas had 14 points as veteran Forward, Dane Kendall added eight points for Colts, who trailed Ravens for most of the game until the final minutes when the contest became dramatic.
For Ravens, guard/forward, Akeem Kanhai had 15 points while forward, Ryan Gullen added 12 points and Dominic Vincente eight points. Ravens’ offensive execution and pressure disappeared in the final five minutes of the game, giving way to the Colts.
After playing catch-up for most of the game, Colts’ new find in the paint, forward, Steve McSean drove the lane for a front rim lay-up that equalised 59-59 with six minutes left on the game clock but Gullen finger-roll cleaned the rim for Ravens’ advantage.
Thomas scored four points straight to hand back Colts a lead with four minutes to play, but Colts turnovers seemed to have gift-wrapped the title for Ravens; shooting guard, Marlon Rodrigues lit up the net from downtown to give Ravens a 67-65 points’ lead.
Onicko Fraser then threw Colts’ possession out-of-bounds to hand Ravens ball possession with a minute to play. Colts’ lifeline came off a fumble from Kanhai that was stolen and converted for a level 67-67 score-line with less than three seconds left in the game.
Thomas heroically towered over his taller opponents to tip-in the ball with 0.9 seconds left in the game to hand Colts the GABA Playoff title; the number two ranked Colts had beaten the number three ranked Pepsi Sonics while the number four seeded Ravens ousted the number one rated, Pacesetters Friday night at the same venue.
In the Division III final, Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters defeated Buxton Heat 70-61 as Ruel Ritch scored 15 points, Rayon Cummings 14 points, Ryan Wilson 13 points and Tarique Cave 12 points in a collective effort for Pacesetters. Kevin Dey had 18 points; Antiola Williams 16 points and Emmanuel Archibald 13 points for Buxton.
In the opening game of the night, 2013 National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) runner-up, Kwakwani Secondary prevailed 70-63 against West Side Jammers. Dominique Douglas scored 27 points, Elvis Thompson 18 points and Clevon Donjon 12 points for Kwakwani, while Ralph Brown had 22 points and Samuel Hollingsworth 14 points for the West Side.
