The Upper Mazaruni district in Region #7 is transformed into a sports village in August of each year and this year is expected to be no different when the annual Inter District Games are held from August 4-9, 2013 at Waramadong.
The District Sports Council, which is responsible for organising these games, have been putting things together ever since March of this year.
Pre tournament Volleyball and Football, which saw male and female teams competing, were held in April at Waramadong and Jawalla, respectively. Waramadong jousted Kamarang, Paruima and Kaikan, while Jawalla entertained teams from Quebanang, Kako, Phillipai, Imbaimadai and Chinoweing.
Attention is now focused on the actual games set for next month at Waramadong and teams have been investing quality time and resources to ensure that they are in the best possible shape for the high level of competition that is anticipated.
Coordinator Rudolph Wellington disclosed to Kaieteur Sport that all systems are in place and they are anticipating some exciting rivalry given the level of preparations that teams have ongoing.
Wellington noted that the villages are ‘crazy’ about football and they leave no stones unturned in order to compete and makes the games attractive and competitive.
He disclosed that some teams would travel for as much as three days to take part. “We are looking forward to another successful year and we are anticipating that this will be the biggest ever Inter District Games yet”.
