The National Scrabble Championships is now a thing of the past and Abigail McDonald continues to regale in victory after retaining the accolade for the third consecutive year. Nevertheless, the top seeds still retain a competitive spirit and this morning they will attempt to clinch the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages an open tournament at the Malteenoes Sports Complex Pavilion this morning.
Public Relations Officer (GASP), Moen Gafoor said that during the just concluded Nationals there were stiff challenges by all of the players which were very encouraging. He feels that many of the players turned in vastly improved performances and indications are they will go a long way. “This should make for some healthy competitions in the next few months,” he said
Indeed, competition is expected to be stiff and all eyes will be on Devraj Deodat whose shrewd word forming skills has earned him the best newcomer prize at the just concluded nationals. Then there is Robert Williams whose returns saw him closing the competition among the top guns.
Additionally, those players out of the Enterprise Scrabble Club have been threatening and word is out that they have been engaged in stiff practice sessions. It means that today’s winner is not written in stone and each player will be required to walk with their arsenal and pray that the bag is nice to them.
Registration time is 09:45hrs and the first tile will be placed at 10:00hrs.Those arriving before registration period will get a $200 discount on the entrance fee of $700 while latecomers will be placed at a disadvantage since their clocks will be activated in their absence.
