Despite a number of players set to make their debut in regional competition, Head Coach of the Guyana squad, Carl Ince, speaking with Kaieteur Sport one day before the team departed yesterday morning to participate in the CASA Championships said he was satisfied with their preparations and was looking forward to good performances.
Ince, who has been at the helm of the junior development programme for the past 15 years during which time Guyana has won the overall title on 11 occasions in addition to a few runner up returns under his stewardship, told this newspapers that the entire coaching staff is extremely encouraged by the team’s preparations and are optimistic that they will perform well.
“I’m satisfied, the Physical Trainer is satisfied and we are ready,” a buoyant Ince said during a telephone conversation on Friday.
Guyana will be defending the team and girls titles, along with Nyron Joseph’s individual Under-17 title which he is set to defend after being named as part of the travelling contingent.
Ince, a very experienced Coach, revealed that big things are expected from players such as Ben Mekdeci, Shomari Wiltshire and Joseph, while adding that the U-15 boys have a strong chance of winning the title.
“Ben (Mekdeci) is a strong favourite to bring back the title having played in the same category last year and have a fair knowledge of most of the players who he will be competing against,” Ince said.
He disclosed that compared with last year everyone is well prepared and he expects them to be strong contenders for the titles up for grabs.
The reticent Head Coach said he was looking forward to something special from young Shomari Wiltshire, who he reminded, will most likely be the youngest in his category, but plays a mean game and could be very difficult to get past.
Victoria Arjoon also came in for special mention with Ince expressing optimism of her doing well.
He closed by mentioning that even though the usual situation of a number of players becoming ineligible to participate this year arose, those graduating to the national team are very strong and has a bright future.
Commenting on the selection of Deje Dias as Assistant Coach, he said it was a good move made by the Guyana Squash Association to expose him to the rudiments of coaching at a higher level and is definitely a positive for the sport locally.
