Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Power and Light, Bharat Dindyal, said that since parliament approved a $20,000 a year subsidy for pensioners, the company has only identified 6000 beneficiaries.
Dindyal’s comments came at a press conference which was held at GPL’s Boardroom, 91 Duke Street, Kingston, late last week. The conference was to discuss measures that will be implemented to mitigate the impact of the quality of service during the inclement weather.
Dindyal added that the power company has since received a list of names from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. He added that the company has attempted to match the provided names to their data base for pensioners in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and Seven.
“We actually received a match for one of the names (first and last name) from over 12,000 pensioners but when we tried to do a match for names and addresses, the addresses in most cases did not match”, the Chief Executive Officer said.
Dindyal added that when they tried to do an address match the company found over 6000 address matches in their system.
He added that the power company has contacted the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) to see how they went through cleaning up their list. What they discovered was that each customer was contacted in order to get a match.
Dindyal further stated that in order to receive the subsidy, pensioners have to be a customer of GPL. “Over the coming weeks we will call in those customers for whom we have found matches to try and clarify who they are and finalize a list,” Dindyal said.
He then stated that GPL is “hoping” that within another month a final list of names will be submitted into the system so that eligible pensioners can benefit from the subsidy.
The Chief Executive Officer added that pensioners who come into the head office will have to walk with a form of identification and a proof of address so that the company can verify both pieces of information and finalize a list for the Ministry.
