Antonio Jaisingh is likely to face a Supreme Court Judge at the next sitting of the Demerara Criminal assizes for the 2010 murder of Randy Joseph, called “Tyson.”
Appearing before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Jaisingh heard that a prima facie case has been made out against him hence his committal.
The accused allegedly murdered Joseph following a heated argument on Saturday November 27, 2010 at Brian’s Liquor Bar, Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara.
The accused and the victim had consumed alcoholic beverages on that day, when the fight broke out. Jaisingh reportedly armed himself with an offensive weapon and inflicted a fatal wound to the victim’s chest.
During the preliminary hearing, the Prosecution, led by Police Sergeant Shellon Daniels, called eleven witnesses.
Attorneys-at-law, Maxwell Mc Kay and Leslie Sobers are representing Jaisingh. The attorneys had made a no case submission on his behalf. However, the Prosecution urged the court that even though there were no eye witnesses to the crime, there is sufficient evidence against the accused for him to lead a defence in the High court.
Jaisingh had originally told the court that he is guilty of the crime but has an explanation.
His attorney at the time, Paul Fung-a-Fat, told the court that victim had attacked his client with a cutlass and in self-defence Jaisingh, reacted. The accused has since maintained this as his defence. Fung-a-Fat had claimed that Jaisingh was physically injured by his opponent.
At yesterday’s ruling, when given a chance to speak, Jaisingh reserved his evidence and witnesses for the High Court.
