Officials of the Guyana Fire Service are yet to visit the Tuschen, West Coast Demerara property to conduct investigations into what may have caused the fire that destroyed the Lot 2253 three-bedroom house on Wednesday.
This was according to owner of the two-storey house, Ganesh Persaud, who explained that despite making several calls to the Leonora Fire Station, a team is yet to visit what is left of his home, to determine the
cause of the fire.
The man maintained that when he left his home a few hours before the fire which was discovered at around 11:00hrs, all electrical appliances were turned off.
“Before me left this house this (Wednesday) morning, me mek sure that all them plugs and switch bin come off, so me nah really know how something like this can happen,” the distressed man said.
Kaieteur News was told that one of Persaud’s employees was in the lower flat of the building which housed a furniture workshop, when he noticed thick smoke emanating from the upstairs.
The man reportedly rushed across the street to a neighbour’s house for assistance. The Fire Service was then summoned, but by the time a fire tender arrived, the wooden upper flat was completely burnt, while the lower concrete flat was gutted by the fire.
The father of two calculated his losses as being in excess of seven million dollars. The family moved into the house in 2007, when it was a mere one bedroom.
Persaud said that a shed which was detached from the house and a workshop attached to its lower flat that contained woodworking machineries, were the only parts of the house that was not destroyed.
However, the machines suffered water damages as a result of efforts to extinguish the fire. Persaud is calling for a prompt investigation to be conducted soon.
“Me na know when them go come, and what they got me pon, but they gotto hurry this thing, so that me can decide what me got to do,” Persaud said.
“This was a fully furnished house. It had everything. TV, microwave, stereo set… all my savings working to extend this house and better my family. But today I have nothing,” Persaud lamented.
“This was a li’l, li’l house, and we work day and night, hard, hard, and we build it up. Now today everything I worked for turn to ashes now. We have no clothes, documents, money…we nah have nothing left,” he added.
