Yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, a father, his son and another defendant known to them were remanded for planting a prohibited plant and being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
On July 17, at Arabio Creek, Rickford and Hoseia Jacobs of Golden Hill, Linden, and Daniel Jones of 18 Section C Christiansburg, Linden, cultivated cannabis.
The second charge read that on the said date, the defendants had in their possession, 909 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The unrepresented trio pleaded not guilty to the allegations that were read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.
According to Prosecutor Vernette Pindar, on the day in question, at about 16:00 hrs, a party of police from Wismar and Mackenzie Police Station acted on information and conducted a search at the farm of the defendants at the said location.
Police found a salt bag that contained several leaves, seeds and stems which they suspected to be cannabis. The ranking officers further found 33 plants about three feet in height which they assumed to be marijuana plants. The defendants were arrested and when cautioned, Rickford, the father of Hoseia Jacobs, told officers that the narcotic belonged to them.
Since no special reasons were presented to the court for the defendants to acquire bail, Prosecutor Pindar objected to such and asked that the seriousness of the offence and quantum involved to be taken into account.
Bail for the defendants was refused and the matter was transferred to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court for report and fixture on July 23.
