More than one month after police Corporal Dorwin Pitman collapsed and died while chasing an escapee at Sophia, his mother yesterday visited the scene and is surprised at what she was told by eyewitnesses. On June 11, last, Pitman, who was at the time attached to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost, was discovered lying motionless in an alleyway in North Sophia minutes after he pursued a man who had bolted from the lock-ups.
There were speculations that Pitman might have been electrocuted by the several illegal wires that criss-crossed the alley through which he pursued the escaping suspect but a post mortem performed by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh confirmed that the cop died as a result of a heart attack.
Yesterday, the dead cop’s mother, Stacy Pitman, told Kaieteur News that she was too devastated to visit the area where her son died sooner. The mother said she finally gathered the courage and went to the scene.
While there, several persons who claimed to be eyewitnesses told her that her son did not die at the scene like what was reported to her by the police.
According to the woman, persons who witnessed what transpired that day told her that when her son was removed from the scene, he was alive.
“They said that he was lying face down and when the police and another man removed him, he was alive. He was still breathing,” the mother related to his newspaper.
The woman also said that her son had a gash to the back of his head when she saw his body at the mortuary the morning he died. “When I asked about the gash, the eyewitnesses told me that he was bleeding behind his head when he was removed.”
“The post mortem shows that he died from a heart attack then where did the gash on his head come from? I need some answers. I am not satisfied with the PM,” Stacy stressed.
