The second annual Grenville Felix cycle road race in honour of Guyana’s oldest living engineer, Ninety six year old Grenville Augustus Felix of Canefield East Canje, Berbice will pedal off on Sunday.
Felix was born in Betsy Ground, East Canje and resided for most of his life at his present address. Felix or “Uncle Gren” as he is known worked for most of his life with the Guyana Sugar Corporation, almost all of which was spent at the nearby Rose Hall Estate where he worked up the ladder from an apprentice to the positions of Senior Engineer, Engineering Manager and Factory Manager before retiring. During his tenure, training countless engineers across the country to sharpen as well as master their skills in the field. He also toured many parts of the world on numerous work commitments.
Felix, who was always a member of a number of community and religious organisations, occupied most of his spare time doing cycling, cycle repairs and furniture making. The father of eight, all of whom lives overseas, had a passion for sporting activities and was an ardent cycling fan but never had the opportunity to participate competitively due to work and other commitments. As such, he with the blessing of his children is using the opportunity to organize the event and do something for the youths.
The race, which is being organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club, is only for club members. The 40 miles event pedals off at 09:00 hrs from in front of Felix residence and journey to Adventure and back to its place of origin.
Prizes will be awarded to the first four finishers, the first two juniors, the first two veterans and the first juvenile to cross the finishing line.
The sponsorship amount was recently handed over at a simple presentation ceremony held in New Amsterdam by one of his son Russell Felix and two of his granddaughters, Weincel Vanbrook and Natay Bates to Secretary of the club Neil Reece and coach Randolph Roberts.
The race coordinator is Randolph Roberts.
