Dear Editor
The municipalities across Guyana are an aging and decaying evidence of the neglect of a partisan politics across the political parties in Guyana.
His Worship, Hammy Green is probably the longest serving Mayor in Guyana – in office almost as long as the PPP is in office. Any he and his office have become a political football.
Why can’t we have local government elections in Guyana? More than 18 years have passed; many persons were born and grew to adult life WITHOUT having a change in local government – or the administration of the municipalities. And the municipalities, as well as the city of Georgetown, speak loudly in its ludicrous decay.
The stinking, cluttered, flooded city, once known as the Garden City is indeed a legacy of the Government of Guyana.
Even the call for “reformed not deformed” policies by Ramjattan has not been followed by any proactive stance by the AFC or any of the opposition. The APNU’s verbiage is not assuring. The city and towns are crumbling while the political parties twiddle their thumbs.
Well, here is the truth – each of the political parties is hiding behind the call for “reform” BUT each is unwilling to risk the outcome of a local government poll since that would be an indicator of how the Guyanese electorate is maturing. None of them wants local government elections since that would be a “real” poll!
And while none of the parties want to risk election play, the ploy is hurting us all badly as our city decays further and the various municipalities are declining. Isn’t it time to just get the necessary done and have local government elections?
Maybe – just maybe— the usual order of business for parliament must take a break to deal with these important issues that are crucial to Guyana’s development – REGARDLESS of your Party Politics.
