The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has offered a public apology to the mother of the late Constable Dorwin Pitman for the embarrassment she as well as her relatives felt at the Police Force’s Wreath Laying Ceremony on Sunday last. The rank had collapsed and died while chasing an escapee a month ago.
Pitman’s mother, Stacy, received a letter from the Office of the Commissioner, inviting her to attend the ceremony and lay a wreath at the foot of the Fallen Heroes Monument for ranks killed in the line of duty.
The woman said the entire Pitman family is embarrassed because her daughter and daughter-in-law turned up at the function, waiting on their turn to lay a wreath for their loved one but his name was never called, despite having received an invitation.
Yesterday, in a letter from the Police’s Public Relations Department, the Force offered a public apology to the Pitman family.
In the statement, it was stressed that “the circumstances surrounding the dead of Dorwin Pitman who suffered a heart attack while making efforts to recapture an escaped prisoner on June 10, last, is not consistent with the criteria for consideration to be listed on the Fallen Heroes Monument”.
“Inadvertently, a letter of invitation from the Guyana Police Force was dispatched to Ms. Stacy Pitman, inviting her to lay a wreath at the Monument Site during the ceremony, which was not catered for in the official programme. The unfortunate chain of events is sincerely regretted,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the still grieving mother is upset that the GPF has said that her son’s death did not meet “the criteria for consideration” despite the fact that he died while trying to catch a criminal.
