A Parika speedboat captain was added to the country’s growing list of road fatalities when his motorcycle collided into the rear of a motor car on Saturday afternoon.
Gavin Renville, 32, of Parika Railway Line and Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, reportedly died on his way to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, after he was picked up in an unconscious state following the collision.
Kaieteur news was told that he was on his way to his aunt’s wedding reception at Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, when the accident occurred.
According to a statement issued by Police, the accident occurred about 17:15 hours on Saturday, on the Parika Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
The statement said that investigations revealed that Renville was riding his motorcycle along the roadway when he collided with the rear of a motorcar that was proceeding in the same direction.
An eyewitness, recounting the accident, explained that the motorcyclist had been traversing the four lane thoroughfare at a fast rate and as a result it was difficult for him to navigate away from the car that was turning just ahead.
The driver of the car had reportedly paused at a turning point, in the vicinity of Peters Street, Parika, and was awaiting traffic on the other side of the road to ease when Renville crashed into his rear.
“This thing happen in a second. The car had on signal and everything but Gavin was coming with nuff speed… that was a CBR he was riding. The bike was moving fast and he couldn’t control the bike,” the eyewitness said.
Luckily, the helmet that Renville wore served its purpose in protecting his head. However, so severe were his other internal injuries that he was mortally wounded.
Subsequent the collision, rescuers unsuccessfully sought to revive the injured man by dousing him with water.
Meanwhile, relatives who were at the wedding reception were devastated when they were informed of the accident.
According to the Renville’s sister, the man’s uncle, ‘Uncle Alwin’, who had just arrived at the wedding reception, received a phone call from the taxi driver who had dropped him off, notifying him of the accident.
The taxi driver offered to take the man to area where his nephew had crashed.
Upon arriving at the accident scene, ‘Uncle Alwin’ reportedly picked up the badly injured Renville and placed him into the said vehicle, after which he was transported to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
However, the man died on the way to receiving medical attention.
The body is currently being held at the Ezekiel’s Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination.
Investigations are currently ongoing.
