West Indies opener Christopher Gayle yesterday said that they will not take Pakistan lightly in the five match one day international series which starts today at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Gayle who was speaking to the media at Providence after his team practice session, which was cut short by the rain, said that Pakistan are a talented side. “They have one of the best bowling attacks and a good batting line up and there is a lot of respect in our side for that so we can’t take them for granted, but we have to use the home condition as an advantage,” added Gayle.
The Jamaican left hander stated that it is going to be interesting to face left arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan. “Facing Irfan and Saeed Ajmal will be a good competition. It’s going to be the first time I will face Irfan and I am looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
The 33 year old Gayle said he is looking forward to a good performance. “I am disappointed with the tri nation tournament, but this is a new series and I am hoping for a better performance,” added Gayle.
International cricket makes a grand return to Guyana after an absence of just over 2 years and Gayle thinks the support will be fantastic. “We always get good support in Guyana, there should be a good crowd and we want to give them something to cheer about,” he stated.
Today’s fixture will mark Gayle’s 250th appearance in One Day Internationals (ODI); Brian Lara with 299 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul 268 are the only other West Indians to have played more one day matches.
Gayle made his ODI debut against India in Toronto on September 11, 1999 and has so far amassed 8,682 runs at an average of 38.24 with a strike rate of 84.51. He has scored 21centuries and 45 fifties.
“To get 250 ODI’s is always good, it takes a lot of years, my service to West Indies cricket has been good and actually I am glad to serve the West Indies on so many occasions,” Gayle informed.
