The unprofessional approach of some ranks of Guyana Police Force towards a Trafficking In Persons (TIP) victim was amplified, yesterday, when a rank of the Bartica Police Station publicly embarrassed a victim.
According to the victim, a rank accused her of falsely accusing a shop owner of forcing her into prostitution in the backdam and a rank of Sherima Police Station of rape.
The 26-year-old is one of five young women rescued by members of the Guyana Women Miners’ Organization (GWMO), last Sunday, from the sex trade in Region Seven. The woman claimed that before entering the backdam she was raped by a rank in the barrack room of the police station.
After giving statements at Bartica Police Station, the young women ages 14, 16, 18, 20 and 26, were taken to Eve Leary in Georgetown to assist the police with their investigations, which were disappointingly slothful. The situation became even more stressful for the victim as there was limited food and clothes at the shelter.
Frustrated, the young lady contacted Simona Broomes, President of the GWMO, informing that she was leaving to take up a legitimate job in the interior. The employer, also a member of the GWMO, spoke to Broomes. The victim said that she also informed a rank of Eve Leary of her intentions to leave and promised to return to Georgetown when necessary.
However, things became ugly for the victim when she was publicly embarrassed by a rank when she went to report at Bartica Police Station to go into the back dam. She was forced to sit on a bench like a detainee and her phone was taken away when she attempted to call a rank at Eve Leary Police Station.
According to her new employer, who is pregnant, she met the victim who explained her situation and wanted a job. Because she needs the extra help at her shop in the interior she decided to hire the girl.
The employer observed that something was wrong with the woman when she started trembling at the sight of the Bartica Police Station. Wanting further details the employer contacted another member of GWMO in Bartica to verify circumstances leading to the woman’s rescue.
They proceeded to the station where the employer vouched for the young woman and promised to ensure she returned to Georgetown when necessary.
But, a rank cautioned the new employer of the woman’s character. “I was told to be careful of this girl because she falsely accused a shop owner of prostitution in the back dam and she accused a police of rape,” the woman said.
The employer contacted Broomes who made some calls and the young woman was subsequently treated differently.
