A 24-year-old truck driver perished after his truck ran off the road into a swollen creek at a place called Rupanau, South Rupununi, 70 miles from Lethem, late Friday night.
The lifeless body of Dwayne Sancho of Lethem was discovered some 40 feet from the truck he was driving which was almost completely submerged under the rising creek water.
His body was subsequently transported to the Lethem Hospital Mortuary where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.
Sancho had left Lethem around 14:00 hours on Friday with a truckload of fuel destined for the gold rich Marudi Mountains.
On board the truck were his porter, Sean Martin, businessman Quincy Browman, two other passengers and two children.
According to reports, the truck had just crossed the Rupanau Bridge. Sancho with the help of his co worker was navigating the road, which was covered by several feet of water, when the mishap occurred.
Kaieteur News understands that the truck slipped off the narrow road and sank into the nearby creek.
However, no one was immediately in danger. It was while trying to right the truck that tragedy struck.
There are reports that while all the other passengers of the truck managed to disembark and made it to the safety of the land, Sancho initially went under the water in an attempt to activate the truck’s winch to try and salvage the vehicle.
However he apparently encountered difficulty and had to retreat. He took refuge at the top of the truck’s cabin. Next it was his co-worker’s turn and he too encountered difficulty after three minutes of trying and had to be pulled from the water under the truck by one of the passengers, Browman.
Meanwhile, the effects of being under water for a lengthy period apparently took its toll on Sancho who for some inexplicable reason came off the truck cabin and went back into the water.
Browman told this newspaper that when he checked at the top of the truck where Sancho was, he was not there.
By that time darkness had set in but a search was still launched for Sancho. His body was eventually recovered some distance away from the truck.
