Determined riding in drenching conditions by Alonzo Greaves and Jude Bentley saw them storming to the first and second places in the feature 35-lap schools boys & invitation race when the 2nd annual Banks Malta Supreme 11-race Cycle Meet took place at the Inner Circuit of the National Park yesterday.
Before the start of the main event the sun was very much a part of proceedings but when the main event got underway, heavy rain and winds greeted the riders and never stopped. The cool conditions somehow energized both Greaves and Bentley and the two went about the business in clinical fashion.
Bentley it was who took the early lead and by the third lap the two riders separated themselves from the peloton and never looked back. Such was their dominance of the race that their lead on the pack was averaging at least one minute per lap.
With Greaves holding the title as the best sprinter in Guyana, there was no debate as to who would have won coming down to the end of the race, Greaves crossed the line in One Hour 15 Minutes 33.34 Seconds.
In a mad dash to the line for the 2nd and 3rd positions, Warren Mc Kay piped Raynauth Jeffrey on the line, chasing down Jeffrey from about 40 meters, showcasing his power as one of the leading sprinters in Guyana. Robin Persaud and Albert Philander took the 5th and 6th places.
Jeban Crawford won the juvenile 10-lap contest in 25 Minutes 20 Seconds. He beat Akeem Arthur and Silvio Inniss in that order.
Junior Niles was again unstoppable in the veteran’s under-50 5-lap race which he won in 13 Minutes 24.44 Seconds. Kennard Lovell and Shameer Baksh followed in that order. Topping the field in the over-60 class was Montgomery Parris ahead of Maurice Fagundes. Wilfred Thom was the lone competitor in the over-50 category.
