With just 17 days before bowl-off of the Caribbean Premiere League, the Central Bank of Barbados (CBB) has endorsed tournament sponsors, Verus International. It has also retracted an earlier claim that Verus International is not a licensed bank on the island.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Verus, Ajmal Khan, has signed onto a long-term deal with the West Indies Cricket Board to bankroll the Caribbean T/20 Tournament, through his company that trades as a merchant bank in Barbados, but CBB in an April statement denied its existence.
In a release yesterday, the governing Barbados bank however stated, “The Central Bank of Barbados confirms that any misunderstanding regarding the status of Verus International has been clarified and resolved.”
Contrary to its April advice that persons’ transacting business with Verus does so at their own risk, CBB now endorses the company: “Verus International is in good standing to conduct its business in Barbados. Verus International has been licensed under the International Business Companies Act in Barbados since 1999. The company’s investments are an important contribution to the diversification of the economies of Barbados and the Caribbean”.
The CPL starts July 30 at Kensington Oval with Barbados Tridents taking on St Lucia Zouks.
This multi-million month-long tournament will feature 24 matches across the Caribbean ending with the final in Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago.
