Dear Editor,
At long last Vincent Alexander has mustered enough courage to speak out about the errors of commission condoned by GECOM Commissioners. Not only are these unethical occurrences but they are a sickening breach of trust by those who are legally bound to make decisions that are above board.
It means, therefore, that the Guyanese public has been given a ‘six to nine’ and taken for a joy ride by the Chairman and Commissioners acting in consort with the Chief Elections Officer.
This makes it incumbent on the opposition APNU and AFC to find ways to send the whole batch of Commissioners packing and have GECOM reconstituted before there is more skullduggery when local government elections are held.
Those who know the internal affairs of GECOM intimately are aware of the wheeling and dealing of the Chairman and former Chief Elections Officer. Perhaps there has been a tremendous falling out between these men that has triggered the Chairman to suggest that the current PRO, one of his cronies, be appointed CEO.
After all, the Chairman and CEO have been the most unholy alliance visited on GECOM. Whenever a staff refuses to carry out their wicked schemes, they use the termination clause of the job contract to terminate his/her employment.
If this method fails, then they seek to humiliate the person by placing him/her before the Disciplinary Committee chaired by another of the Chairman’s cronies, the Chief Security Officer.
A case in point is the termination of the employment of Imdaad Sattaur, an Accountant, for probing the fantastic prices for laptop computers and other equipment using UNDP excess funding.
With his departure, equipment including a cordless headphone for the PRO was purchased from a bogus company in Charlotte Street. There are other instances where GECOM was used as a financial milch cow. In this regard, there should be a forensic audit of past procurement activities by GECOM.
With the revelation of deception by the former CEO, acting in collusion and connivance with Commissioners, it is time for the Opposition Parties and international stakeholders to act promptly before our democratic norms are further compromised.
