In the quest to forge cross-borders relation in order to strengthen the exchange of health collaborations, the Ministry of Health yesterday commenced a three-day meeting with a delegation from Suriname.
According to Minister of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran, the move comes as part of the local Health Ministry’s efforts to embrace the notion of Frontier healthcare which was first established in April during the launch of ‘Vaccination of the Americas’ week.
“The Ministry of Health is pushing frontier health and we are going to be pushing it with Suriname this time and shortly with Cayenne and Brazil too,” he disclosed during a press conference on Wednesday.
The delegation from Suriname includes Health Minister, Michel Bolkland, along with a technical team and according to Minister Ramsaran, “this is part and parcel of what came out of our recent border activity.”
Moreover, the meeting is designed to forge unity between the two countries as according to the Minister, “diseases don’t respect borders…so we are strengthening the exchange of health information, health education and the exchange of health care workers.”
The multiple-day gathering at the International Conference Centre will also see the attendance of Head of Suriname’s Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), Dr Guillermo Troya, and PAHO Representative, Dr. Gustavo Bretas, along with a team from the local Health Ministry headed by Dr Ramsaran.
The meeting, which is being dubbed a Bi-National Commission for collaboration on Health, represents a collaborative move between the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP), the German International Cooperation (GIZ), EPOS Health Management, which is headquartered in Germany, and the Ministries of Health of Guyana and Suriname.
This Bi-National Commission meeting originated from a bid by the Ministry of Health, Suriname and the recommendations of two consultancies completed under the PANCAP/GIZ/EPOS Migrant Project. The consultants’ recommendations were influenced by their findings which highlighted the similarities in geographic location, the experiences of high cross-border movement and the matching profile of the migrant and mobile populations within both countries
In addition to discussing issues related to HIV/AIDS, participants will also deliberate on health and wellness matters related to migrant and mobile populations in Guyana and Suriname. These would include neglected Tropical Diseases, Tuberculosis, Malaria and other communicable diseases. The outcome of the meeting will be a framework for Bi-national collaboration on health service policies related to migration and mobility and the priority health issues of both countries
The Migrant Project supports all priority areas of the Caribbean Regional Strategic Framework (CRSF 2008-2012) but is mainly centered on Priority Area 3, Prevention of HIV transmission with specific emphasis on migrant and mobile populations. The project has four components: improving legal and policy framework, implementing innovative health financing mechanisms, empowering communities and making HIV services more migrant friendly.
