The Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its number one corporate sponsor Digicel ran off night two of the Digicel Senior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Courts.
There were several exciting matches as all of the leading players in Guyana took to the courts. They were no upsets as all of the higher seeded players progressed to the next round.
In the first ladies quarterfinal match, Ashley Khalil had a comfortable straight sets win over Kathy Ten-Pow 11-3,11-7,11-0. Ashley DeGroot was made to work hard by Victoria Arjoon. She lost the first game at 7, but then stormed back to take the other three games 11-6,11-3,11-2.
In the last ladies match up of the evening, Mary Fung A Fat was extended to four games but defeated Akeila Wiltshire 11-7,11-3,9-11,11-4.
In the men’s round of sixteen match ups, the expected feature encounter between Raphael DeGroot and Deje Dias did not turn out to be that close as Raphael was too good for Deje winning fairly comfortably, 11-7,11-7,11-4.
Defending champion Alex Arjoon was much too strong for Brian Yong winning 11-2,11-0,11-1, while Nicolette Fernandes was clinical in her win over Ian Mekdeci 11-3,11-3,11-3. Jason-Ray Khalil won easily against Jo Jo Mekdeci winning 11-2,11-1,11-3 while former National Champion Regan Pollard sent Nicholas Narain to all corners of the court while winning 11-7,11-4,11-6.
Other winners in the men’s round of sixteen match ups were as follows:
Ben Mekdeci defeated Adam Alves 11-6,11-5,11-5
Nyron Joseph defeated Dennis Dias 11-6,11-5,11-4
Steven Xavier beat Alan Downes 11-3,11-8,11-6
The men’s quarterfinals will be played today and the draw is as follows:
Alex Arjoon against Raphael DeGroot, Regan Pollard against Nyron Joseph, Ben Mekdeci against Jason- Ray Khalil and Nicolette Fernandes against Steven Xavier.
One ladies match is scheduled as Taylor Fernandes will come up against Kathy Ten-Pow in a consolation round match. Matches will commence from 6:00pm.
