The Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its number one corporate sponsor Digicel ran off night one of the Digicel Senior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Courts last evening.
Matches were played in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
In action on the opening night was Women’s World number 26 Nicolette Fernandes who was all business as she took care of promising junior player Taylor Fernandes in straight sets 11-1,11-3,11-4.
Former Caribbean Under-19 Champion Kathy Ten-Pow was in a destructive mood as she defeated Larissa Wiltshire 11-4,7-11,11-7,11-8.
There were also five matches in the men’s division.
Ian Mekdeci defeated Jonathan Antczak 12-10,11-8,11-7.
Dennis Dias was too good for Haopei Yang 11-5,11-3,11-4.
Jo Jo Mekdeci was made to work very hard but eventually took care of Alec Melville 12-10,7-11,12-10,11-7.
Matthew Phang gave a good account of himself but still went down to Adam Alves 6-11,6-11,7-11. Brian Yong was also victorious when he defeated Lee Fung A Fat 11-6,11-8,11-1.
Matches continue today from 6:00 pm when the round of sixteen matches in the men’s division will be played and the quarterfinals of the women’s division.
Match of the night should be between two former national junior players Deje Dias and Raphael DeGroot.
Also in action in the men’s division will be defending men’s champion Alex Arjoon, Nicolette Fernandes, Jason- Ray Khalil and former National champion Regan Pollard in action.
In the women’s division the quarterfinal match-ups are as follows:
Ashley DeGroot against Victoria Arjoon, Mary Fung A Fat against Akeila Wiltshire and Ashley Khalil against Kathy Ten-Pow.
Nicolette Fernandes has already progressed to the semi-finals in this division with her win over Taylor Fernandes last night.
