It was a ding dong battle in spurts especially in the final 20 minutes but the lads from Covent Garden Secondary held their focus and nerves to defeat their counterparts from the Institute of Professional Education (IPE) and claim the East bank title of the 2013 edition of the Digicel Schools Football Championship.
All the action unfolded at the Grove Playfield yesterday afternoon. The game started with IPE on the offensive and most of the play concentrated in the Covent Garden half. For some time it seemed as if Covent Garden had no answer to the constant raids engineered by the opposition’s midfield and forwards.
Lack of discipline in the attacking third resulted in the many chances created by IPE going by the wayside; their lapses were surely going to come back to haunt them.
Complacency stepped in and two IPE players were cautioned for handling the ball in the area, the second player did so in the box which resulted in Covent Garden being awarded a penalty against the run of play.
Stepping up to take the shot was central defender Trevor Jones, their most robust player who played a major hand in the victory. The first shot went past IPE’s custodian Anthony Croal at the right post but the referee ordered the kick retaken.
Second time around the ball just went in a different direction (right) but with the same result; the goal came in the 33rd minute of play and with a dagger like effect. Thereafter, Covent Garden enjoyed their best period of possession and were able to create a few chances.
After the break, as expected, IPE threw all they had at the Covent Garden lads but it all came up to naught as some excellent defending led by Jones and equally efficient goalkeeping by his teammate Joshua Allen nullified every effort of the IPE team.
When the final whistle was blown, it came with wild scenes of celebration
from the Covent Garden players, teachers and supporters as they emerged East Bank champions. They will now go on to play the winner of the East Coast Zone later this week.
