Officials of the Guyana Boxing Association have put their affiliates on notice following confirmation of several initiatives towards their continued development.
Activities are scheduled to get underway on July 29-28 when officials collaborate with those of beverage giants, Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) to stage the annual U-16 boxing tournament. Consequently, Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldon, will facilitate a coaching programme for beginners at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), Albouystown, July 20 from 10:00hrs -14:00hrs. One day later, he will host a similar initiative for seasoned coaches.
Additionally, the National Open Boxing Championships are scheduled for August month end and President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, said that this tournament will be used to select a team for participation in the World Championships scheduled for Kazakhstan in October.
Meanwhile, three boxers will soon be encamped at the ALBG in preparation for the South American Youth Championships slated for Peru sometime in September.
At the moment the ALBG is undergoing renovation works and the boxers would be en-camped just as soon as works are completed.
Those pugilists identified to commence training are jnr/flyweight Harpy Eagles representative, Tefon Green, flyweight, Joel Williamson of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym and welterweight Travis Fraser (Tiger Eye). Wensel Thomas has been given coaching responsibilities, while GBA Vice President, Eustace Cuffy is the manager.
Mr. Ninvalle said that his executives are continuing to focus on the local boxers’ development in the run up to the 2016 Brazil Olympics. He said that boxers selected for the Peru championships must satisfy the eligibility requirement, which states that they must be born between January 1 and December 31, 1996.
