Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago Rugby Football Union Presidents Select both opened their Regional Under-19 campaigns with comfortable victories over Turks & Caicos and St Lucia respectively.
The Presidents Select notched up 5 tries over a Turks team who were making their debuts on the Under-19 Regional stage. Early tries from Cathal Long and Sheron Edwards and a conversion and penalty by Leon Pantor put the home side into a 12-3 half time lead; with Turby Field adding the penalty for the visitors.
The Presidents selects extended their lead after the interval courtesy of tries from Akash Bejah a second from Edwards and one from Miguel Malcolm; with Pantor scoring 3 more conversions.
In the second match of the day Guyana overcame a lively St Lucia team 29-10 with the former team making their comeback on the Regional Under-19 scene after a number of years in the wilderness.
“Powerhouse” No 8 Telroy Mcalmont opened the scoring with a brace of tries to give Guyana an early 10-0 lead, Grantley Williams added a third and Jamal Angus a fourth, the latter one converted by Godfrey Broome to give Guyana a 22-0 half time lead.
A converted try by Kevin Joseph extended the lead to 29-0. St Lucia improved as the game progressed and were rewarded with two late tries, one from Junior Hunter and another from Elvin Joseph to pull the score back to 29-10 at the final whistle.
