Demerara will face the President’s XI at Wales while Berbice will take on Essequibo at Bourda when the final preliminary round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\ Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life General Insurance Company (GTM) 50 over tournament is played today.
Demerara and the President’s XI have one win each from two matches and a victory for either will guarantee them a place in the final. Demerara went down to Berbice in the first round before they rebounded to beat Essequibo in the second while the President’s XI overcame Essequibo before losing to Berbice.
Demerara’s batting has failed to live up expectations so far. Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Brain Sattaur and Andrew Gibson have not been among the runs. They will have to improve in this regard; a lot will also depend on the form of Kemol Savory and Kamesh Yadram if they are aiming for a final place.
Their bowling will rely a lot on spinners Steven Sankar and Devon Lord; pacers Bernard Bailey, Dexter George and Shivram Persaud.
The President’s XI cannot be written off since they are capable of holding their own. Ryan Shun, Martin Pestano Bell and Denesh Mangal will lead their batting, but it will be interesting to see how they handle the Demerara spinners. Mark Hamilton, Danny Narayan and Garfield De Roche spearhead the President’s XI bowling.
Berbice, with two victories in as many matches will look to maintain a clean sheet before the final. Their spinners Shawn Perreira, Gudakesh Motie Kanhai and Dereck Narine have proven themselves in this competition and will look to continue their good showing.
Romario Shepherd is the fastest bowler in the tournament and has impressed with his consistency. Berbice’ top order has been inconsistent so far and they will look to Nick Ramsaroop, Sharaz Ramcharran and Narine for prop up their batting.
Essequibo skipper Ricardo Adams seemed to find form with a half century against Demerara in the second round and must spend more time at the crease to help his team post a decent score. Mark Gonsalves, Andy Dass, Rajiv Balgobin and Avinash Persaud must curb their attacking instinct to an extent to help Essequibo’s batting.
Herry Green has bowled with control and variation and will look for more support from Adams, Julio Jones Dass and Hassan Mohamed.
