A shot filled unbeaten 45 from opener Akshay Homraj spurred Berbice to an emphatic nine-wicket victory over the President’s X1in the second round of the GTM Under-19 limited overs cricket tournament at the DCC ground yesterday.
Played in scorching heat on a fast outfield and slow pitch the President’s X1 were bundled out for 73 with only three batsmen reaching double figures. Berbice then galloped to victory in 13 overs finishing on 74-1 with the 17-year-old Rose Hall Town wicket keeper slamming two fours and four sixes in his undefeated knock.
The confident right-handed Homraj, who missed Berbice’s opening match against Demerara at Albion on Wednesday due to a prior engagement, added 45 with Devin Baldeo to build a solid foundation for their team before Baldeo was stumped for 20 off talented off-spinner Vishal Narayan.
The pugnacious Homraj hastened the victory be dumping left-arm spinner Mark Hamilton for consecutive straight sixes; leaving Sharaj Shameer not out on two.
Earlier, only Martin Pestano-Bell (18), Avishkar Sewkarran (15) and Garfield DeRoche (11) got into double digits after Pestano-Bell and DeRoach put together 17 for the seventh wicket in the best partnership of the innings.
Shameer (2-13), Shawn Pereira (2-14), Ramcharran (2-9) and Romero Shepherd (2-22) shared eight wickets between them. (Sean Devers)
