A female Canter truck driver who was questioned about the May 3 hit-and-run death of a 66-year-old man in High Street appears to be no longer a suspect. A police official said that the woman has not been linked to the fatal accident and that police are seeking legal advice on the case.
Jairam Beepat, of Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, was reportedly struck by a Canter truck while attempting to cross High Street, in the vicinity of Princes Street. The driver fled the scene.
However, police reportedly detained a woman a few days later after learning that she had taken a damaged Canter truck to an East Coast Demerara body-shop for repairs. The woman was reportedly taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station but was released after informing police that she was pregnant.
