-UG also booted in first round
As if the complaints of poor offense thundered through the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Thursday night, Bishop’s High School annihilated Brickdam Secondary in the National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) with pure offensive efficiency.
Bishop’s High thrashed Brickdam Secondary 82-42 in an Under-17 game, after rebounding from an opening loss to the ultra-effective Kwakwani Secondary School.
SANDWICHED! UG’s guard, Quincy Easton is sandwiched in the paint against PC Thursday night when the NSBF continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Daniel Haynes scored 24 points while Marvin Durant had 18 and Michael Broomes 15 points for Bishop’s High to hand Brickdam their second straight loss, effectively ensuring their egress from the competition and maintaining Bishop’s last round berth. Joshua Lee scored 13 points for Brickdam. Meanwhile, Kwakwani survived a comeback scare in another Under-17 fixture against St. Roses High School. Kwakwani, eventually, held on for a 41-34 win to remain unbeaten in the group.
In an up-tempo game, St. Roses came from seven points down to take a one-point lead with three minutes left in the game, but their offense immediately collapsed as Kwakwani took command of crunch-time with an 8-0 run to win the game.
Kevin Gordon had 11 points while Dellon Wallace had nine points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, Shemar Huntley had 15 points and Anfernee Jervis 12 points and 13 rebounds for St. Roses in an evenly contested second half battle until their slump.
Marian Academy ensured their place in the next round of the Under-17 competition with yet another win, this time a 38-25 triumph against President’s College. Judah Stepheny scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds along with eight steals to lead Marian to the win.
New Amsterdam Multilateral kept their hopes alive in the U-17 category with a 44-25 win when they played Plaisance Secondary. Shurland Gills, Joel Glasgow and Ramone Fogeray scored six points each for NA ‘Multi’ in the crucial encounter.
Meanwhile, the University of Guyana (UG) was booted from the competition after they lost their second straight game to President’s College 28-42; UG squandered a nine-point advantage early in the first half to become another casualty in the senior contest.
At the end of the first half UG led 22-20; it was the closest they got to a win, adding merely just six points in the second half of the contest as PC launched an offensive assault. Nyambekerie Bacchus had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for PC while Fonsie James scored 10 points for the University.
In the final senior game of the night, Guyana School of Agriculture won 30-25 when they played Berbice’s J.C Chandisingh. Emmanuel Archibald scored 16 points for the Agriculture school and Raybourne Murry was the only player from Chandisingh in double figures with 11 points in the game. (Edison Jefford)
