Amidst several occurrences of vicious attacks from dogs resulting in actual bodily harm to people and animals alike, comes the most recent dog attack on four-year-old Shane Inasi.
Negligence on the part of the owners of the savage common breed dog is believed to have been what led to the incident.
It was reported that on Tuesday at around 17:30 hours, while playing with his nine-year-old brother in the yard, Shane was viciously attacked by the dog, which reportedly belongs to the owners of the Good Hope, West Bank Demerara apartment which the boy’s mother, Vanisa Inasi, rented.
According to the child’s mother, the dog would normally be tied at the back of the house where his pen is situated. However, recently, the dog has been roaming the yard unleashed or tied in the vicinity where the children would normally play.
She said that although the dog had never behaved viciously towards her family members, she was still concerned and requested the owners to have the animal tied at the back of the house but her efforts proved futile.
The woman reported that at the time of the attack, she was at work and the children were left in the care of their grandmother, who was reportedly in the bathroom.
The child received lacerations on his right cheek and above his left eyebrow which required stitches as a result of bites; as well as scrapes and bruises around his head, face, back and left arm.
Although unable to say much because of his discomfort, with a swollen mouth, the child briefly related his horrific ordeal.
“The dog jump on me and bite me”, the child related with tearful eyes when asked what had caused the bruises on his face.
According to reports, while the children were playing, the dog rushed to the four-year-old from behind causing him to fall, after which the animal bit him repeatedly.
Neighbours who heard the child’s screams reportedly jumped the fence to gain access to the yard and subsequently took the injured child to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he received immediate medical attention.
According to reports, the owners of the property, who occupy the upper flat of the building which the family rented, were not at home at the time of the attack. However, the child’s mother reported that her landlord called her shortly after the attack, asking her if she knew what happened to her son. She said that he had promised to meet her at the hospital but he never showed up.
She said that later on the night of the attack, after she had arrived home with her son, she had a conversation with the man, who offered her monetary compensation and medical assistance for the child. However, she refused his offers since she intends to allow the police to deal with the matter.
A statement is currently lodged at La Grange Police Station.
Kaieteur News understands that after several unsuccessful attempts by police to apprehend the man, he turned himself in and is currently on station bail.
The matter was scheduled to be called in the Wales Magistrate’s Court yesterday but as a result of the complainant’s late arrival it will be called on July 12.
