Goals on both sides of the break was enough to send Kingston Secondary into the next round of the 2013 Digicel/Powerade Nationwide Schools Football Championship which continued yesterday, at the Camptown ground in Campbellville.
The North Georgetown-based school defeated Morgan’s Learning Centre 2-1 through strikes from Andell Hatton, who netted in the 12th minute of play and Vincent Thomas in the 65th minute.
Kevin James’ 60th minute effort was not enough to prevent their exit from the championship after Renaldo Dover missed penalty that allowed Kingston to keep their head in front and maintain the slim lead until the final whistle came.
Kingston playing with more composure than their opponents took the lead through Hatton, who cleverly chipped a right foot shot over Morgan’s Learning Centre’s Delroy Marian and the ball nestled safely into the left hand corner of the net.
Needing to score the equaliser, Morgan’s Learning Centre relentlessly searched for it, but solid defending dented their efforts as the half time whistle sounded with Kingston clinging to a 1-0 advantage.
On the resumption, the see saw battle continued with Kingston’s Thomas testing the opposition goalkeeper with a stunning shot that was parried into touch for a corner and that was followed at the other end with Dover rasping drive skimming the crossbar as the fans sensed the tempo had risen.
Fifteen minutes into the second period, Morgan’s Learning Centre finally got justice for their unrelenting incursions.
The goal followed a corner which was cleared into touch for a throw in that saw a squared pass make its way across the Kingston goal area only to land at the feet of an unmarked James, who nonchalantly tucked it past Emanuel Simon stationed between the uprights.
Urged on by its supporters, Kingston instead of being deflated by the development remained positive and regained the lead five minutes later through Thomas, who received a gem of a pass inside the 25-yard box, before firing a fierce shot past a surprised Marian.
Dover then had a chance to level the proceedings when he was brought down in the box by the goalkeeper after a mesmerising run that saw him blow past two floundering defenders, before being fouled by the keeper.
The ensuing spot kick was misdirected as it sailed just outside the right upright to the reprieve of the Kingston players and fans. They held on tenaciously until the final whistle sounded.
