East Ruimveldt trounced Saints Stanislaus College 6-1, Guyana Industrial Training College beat Saint Mary’s 6-3 and Queens College got a walk over from Saint John’s College as action continued in the city zone of the Digicel Nationwide U-18 Schools Football Championships yesterday at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary.
Although enjoying an improved second half, when Christopher Narine scored in the 50th minute, Saints were overwhelmed by an aggressive East Ruimveldt who scored four goals by the half time whistle in a period in which they dominated possession.
Jamal Pedro, who also found the back of the net in the 8th minute, opened the account in the 6th minute, to register a brace in sweltering heat to put East Ruimveldt two goals ahead early in the contest.
Shawn Kirton then made it 3-nil in the 9th minute before Romel Legall scored in the 21st minute to climax a convincing 45 minutes for East Ruimveldt.
Narine’s goal briefly inspired a fight back from Saints whose custodian, Andrew Hendricks, saved a penalty as the red and white Digicel banners danced merrily in the breeze.
A well struck left footer from a well orchestrated build-up just outside the 18-yard box, was well saved by the East Ruimveldt goalkeeper, Shamar Dass, about 15 minutes into the second half.
But frequent raids on goal from East Ruimveldt resulted in Troy Carrington, who headed the ball past a leaping Hendricks, and Legall, netted his second goal to formalize the 6-1 score-line by scoring within seconds of each other in the 58th minute.
Had the lads from East Ruimveldt converted from more of their unsuccessful attacks on the goal; with shots hitting the side of the net, going wide of the mark and sailing over the head of the Keeper, the victory could have been even more emphatic on the heavy ground.
Earlier, Jamal McPherson who scored in the 30th and 64th minutes on either side of half time was supported Delon Dalrymple (11th), Randy Layne (20th) and Troy Lewis (57th) as they also registered goals for GTIC. Raphael Charles (3rd), Andel Smith (27th) and Cort Steel (74th) scored for the losers.
The Georgetown zone of the competition is scheduled to continue today with four matches. The games were switched to the Police ground because of the poor condition of the QC ground.
