University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) Lecturer and Berbician, Dr. Julie Jailall held a book- signing for her new book of Short Stories, ‘Sharda’, recently in the UGBC Auditorium. Simultaneously, she hosted an English Writing Skills Workshop which targeted over 80 teachers and school administrators from various schools across Berbice. Dr. Jailall is an English Lecturer at UGBC, “and based on my work samples and based on errors that I have found in their writings, I decided there is need for training of our teachers in the high schools based on the data that I have been collecting.”
Dr. Jailall, an overseas- based returning Guyanese, was the former Principal of Cooper Elementary School as well as Hor River Elementary School, both in North Carolina.
She taught at Cummings Lodge Secondary as a High School teacher of English way back in the 1980’s after which she migrated and taught in the Bahamas, United States, and then taught at the Abu Dhabi University before returning to this country to serve.
Dr. Jailall noted that the book which was recently completed was designed basically for the teaching of CXC English ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the schools. “It’s a collection of short stories based in Guyana, in post- colonial times, about the struggles of a little girl, with whom I am sure many of our students will identify.
“It’s a very enjoyable book with some sad moments but there are moments that will make you laugh, so I would encourage people to purchase the book.” The book is available at Giftland OfficeMax in Georgetown as well as from Dr. Jailall herself. Her contact information is 640-3698.
She urged teachers and schools to acquire the book for their schools and use it to help students. She added, too, that it is her first book, while she is in the process of writing another series of ‘Sharda’, which will consist of another set of short stories.
After the presentation, she then signed copies of the books which were sold. She thanked outgoing Region 6 Education Officer, Mrs. Shafiran Bhajan who worked along with her to put together the workshop as well as Director of UGBC, Professor Daizal R. Samad.
Dr. Samad praised Dr. Jailall by saying that for the longest while, “UGBC has been struggling to bring Dr. Julie Jailall full-time on board to this campus and it has been a struggle, and a needless one, but that is the fate of UGBC since we are but slaves to our Turkeyen masters.”
He added that until “we learn that Berbice is not a second- hand place, we will all not do as well as we ought to do as a nation. Berbice is central to Guyana, as is Demerara equally so; as is Essequibo and we must begin to realize that.”
