The current inclement weather now sweeping Guyana continues to have a devastating effect on most outdoor activities across Guyana and one such activity that continues to be affected is the Rose Hall Town Athletics Club one day athletics meet which was planned for yesterday.
The meet which was previously scheduled for Monday 27th May as part of Guyana’s Independence activities and dubbed a “day of athletics” was previously postponed due to the inclement weather. The day’s activities were scheduled to include a 5K road race and day of sprints in commemoration of Guyana’s 47th Independence anniversary.
The 5k event was scheduled to begin outside the Sparkle Disco at Ulverston and end with a lap around the Area H Ground in Rose Hall Town, while the day of sprints track meet was schedule for the Area H Ground.
However early morning rain and a wet outfield left the organisers with no alternative but to postpone the meet which would have included races for 100M, 200M, 400M and 4x100M relay events in the U14,16,18,20,25 and over-25 categories for both male and females.
Athletes from West Berbice, New Amsterdam Canje, Fyrish, Rose Hall Town No 53, Skeldon, and Corriverton including other areas of Central and Upper Corentyne were scheduled to participate. The new date will be set when the weather improves. (Samuel Whyte)
