An accident involving a route 48 minibus, yesterday, left 21persons injured. The mishap, took place on Homestretch Avenue as the bus was heading to Sophia.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver of the minibus lost control of the vehicle after the brakes failed. The bus then skidded off Homestretch Avenue and ended up in a canal at Mandela Avenue.
The driver of the vehicle at the time was firefighter, Reginald Europe, 40, of 579 C Field Sophia. The minibus was transporting 21 passengers, including some very young children.
Eyewitnesses and public spirited persons aided in pulling the occupants to safety.
“I join de bus and we were heading to Sophia I can’t really say what happen but we end up in the trench. The bus was not speeding to that extent … the bus just kinda wobble a bit and we end up in the trench,” one passenger, who sustained minor head injuries said.
Among those injured passengers are Nicholas Lyttle, 20, of Lot152 Block E South Sophia; Nicholas Barrow, 17 of Lot 64 Plum Park Sophia; Mark Gonsalves of 1008 Block E South Sophia; Patricia Martin, 37, of Lot 166 E Field Sophia; Bonita and Tamika Clarke, of Lot 909 B field Sophia; Anthony Hamilton of Lot 1020 Turkeyen; Antonio Augustus, 32 of Lot 290 Block X South Liliendaal East Coast Demerara; Margaret Augustus 37, Joshua, Christopher and Abigail Augustus all of the aforementioned address.
Also injured are Akeem Drakes, 18 of Lot 137 South Sophia; Nigel Grannum, 22 of Lot 28 Industry, East Coast Demerara; Neil Pindar, eight; Tiana Browne, 15, Ashley George, three; Hortense George, 30, Lestroy George, 10 and Travis Pryce , 24 who was the conductor of the minibus at the time.
They were all taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where they were all treated for minor injuries and sent away.
