A number of Essequibians capitalized on the free medical care and services offered to them by qualified doctors and nurses from the United States, when the team visited the Region on Wednesday, and again on Thursday.
The team comprised 35 doctors who visited Airy Hall, ‘Pomona, Charity and Bush Lot, Essequibo Coast.
Medical care was offered in the areas of dental and general health care. However, while most of the doctors were affiliated to Christian churches in the states, fifty percent of those doctors emerged from the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Dr. Janice Emanuel Bunn, an overseas-based Guyanese who heads the Action Performance Commitment Organization (APC) and also functions as a lecturer of Advanced Studies at the University of Phoenix, said that most of the doctors are Guyanese who migrated to the United States.
It was a great opportunity for them to give back of their services, especially to fellow Guyanese, she said.
Dr. Bunn strongly believes life is about giving and wherever that need is, they would continue to avail both their time and services.
Dr. Bunn, who has roots in Anna Regina, said that her field of studies lies in Public Health. She has been working in the United States for almost 33 years. She said that most of the medical cases that the team of doctors confronted, especially with patients on the Coast, were high levels of Cholesterol and Diabetic ailments.
She advised that if the patient learns to manage his/her disease, that patient would be able to live a good, quality life. The services extended by the team were open to the public.
The team of doctors included Dr. Wendy Reece, Dr. Edward Kan Kam and Dr. Orin Douglas, who was identified as the Medical Director.
For the past five years a medical team has been visiting Guyana.
The team plans to visit St. Vincent in 2014. (Yannason Duncan)
