Dear Editor,
On September 3, 2012, bus drivers who operate in front of the Bartica market to Five Miles Potaro Road commenced strike action over the shoddy condition of the Potaro Road. This road caused damage to their buses. It represented the yearly wastage of taxpayers’ money.
On September 5, 2012 the strike continued in the form of picket in front of the Regional Democratic Office (RDC). The protesters were joined by a number of bus owners, other road users and residents of Bartica who gave their full support.
The picket and strike action led to the establishment of a four-member delegation headed by me. It included members of the United Mini us Union, Bartica branch. The Regional team was comprise of the persons as follows, Mr. Naeem Mohamed -Hinterland Engineer, Mr. Gordon Bradford-Regional Chairman and Mr. Peter Ramotar -Regional Executive Officer.
At the end of the negotiation on September 6, 2012 myself along with the other members of the delegation went outside of the Regional office were we met with the persons who were on strike and picket exercises to advise the gathering about the outcome of the negotiation and agreements reached.
On Saturday June 8, 2013 a number of the residents who live along the Potaro Road and other road users, among them bus owners, drivers and conductors, met with me in a very unhappy manner. Again they were unhappy with the state of the road that sparked the protest last year.
They said that every year the government normally patch the Road and say that it fix. They spend millions of dollars. The Potaro Road is in worst condition than the trail from Bartica to Linden.
Some of the bus owners want to increase the bus fare immediately. They want the United Minibus Union, to increase4 the fare from $40 to $60 for nursery school students; $60 to100 for primary school students, $100 to $200 for high school students and from $200 to $300 for adult.
But the union is insisting that the fares remain stagnant. We just don’t want to increase the fare because we want more money. If anything it is because we are running our buses at a loss. All the money that we make is spent on repairs at the mechanic shop and spare parts shop.
I propose to meet with the Regional Chairman Mr. Gordon Bradford, and Mr. Peter Ramotar -Regional Executive Officer with a letter reminding and insisted that they fulfill and honor all of the commitments consistent with all that were agreed upon last year.
