The South Turkeyen Sports Committee has organised several events to commemorate Fathers’ Day and the walk-a-ton, initially scheduled for Saturday June 15, will now be staged tomorrow morning.
Participants are required to convene at the Square of the Revolution at 05:30hrs for a prompt start half an hour later. Organisers have tabbed $200 per mile for the race which finishes at the National Park, Thomas Lands.
The proceeds from this activity will be donated to eight elderly fathers from the Vryheid’s Lust community and another eight from the Blind Institute. Ricks and Sari has also donated several hampers towards the cause.
Activities continue one day later with a 5-a-side and penalty shootout football competition at the National Cultural Centre tarmac, Mandela Avenue. Participating teams will be drawn from the East Coast, East Bank and Georgetown.
Activities get underway with an Under-20 match between Queen’s College and Bishops High School followed by an Under-13 encounter between Redeemer Primary and Meadow Brook Football team.
Several entities and individuals have teamed up to offset expenses among them Bannas Foundation, Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and Melbourne Inn. Cash prizes were donated by Mark Phillips, Attorneys-at-Law, Roysdale Forde and Joseph Harmon, Ken Phillips of the Antarctic Maintenance and Repairs, GFF President Christopher Matthias, Rameze Mohamed MP, BM Soats Auto Dealers, and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Robert Persaud. The West Indian Sports Complex has donated 2 footballs to facilitate those matches.
