It is sort of a sophisticated version of what we would colloquially call ‘war-break’ in Guyana but in this commercial edition players arm themselves with non-toxic paintball guns and literally try hunting each other in a ‘bunker-style’ setting.
To say that Paintball is fun would be an understatement. It certainly encourages one to relive the childhood days when make-shift wooden guns or water-guns were used in ‘war break’ where the task was to find a hidden opponent.
Planet Paintball Guyana (PPG) is the leading Paintball Sport Park operator in Guyana. Since the company began operations in August last year, the sport has been stretched across three facilities, including the National Insurance Scheme Ground on CARIFESTA Avenue, the Jackie Robertson Sports Ground on the East Coast (before UG road) and Dakota Park near the South Dakota Circuit on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

Each venue represents a space for a different format of the game. The speedball format is played at the NIS Ground; the scenario format is played on the East Coast and the ‘woodsball’ format is played at the Dakota Park venue on the Highway.
The founders of Planet Paintball Guyana, Chris and Reona Cathro, is committed to development of the sport, which is globally played and recognised through the National Paintball Professional League (NPPL) with 18 franchise teams in the United States of America.
“Together the three PPG paintball parks mean that no matter what format of the game you like it is available for you,” the dynamic duo told Kaieteur Sport. Admittedly, the Cathros come with a great deal of technical experience administering paintball.
Chris Cathro, PPG Director of Operations, has been involved in the sport from its early days here in the mid ‘80s, garnering over 20 years of experience and knowledge in the discipline. He stated clearly that his role is ensuring player safety, value, and fun.
Reona Cathro, PPG Chief Executive Officer and Chris’s wife, is an entrepreneur, who has one of the most sophisticated roles of encouraging and maintaining corporate interest. Together, the duo believes that they are really on to a growing global phenomenon.
“It is the mission of PPG to strive to ensure that the sport is continuously developed, evolves and improved in line with the very latest international trends and standards; we do not hesitate to sell paintball as the next big thing in sports in Guyana,” Reona noted.
Planet Paintball has demonstrated and the game played at GuyExpo 2012, The National Schools’ Championships last year and Linden Town Week. Planet Paintball will host its first mega contest in July when it undertakes the Firestorm X-Ball Tournament.
The World Ultimate Woodsball League appointed Planet Paintball the official ‘Ultimate League’ status in Guyana. With this appointment, Guyanese players can now play League and tournament games and receive an international player and team ranking among 180 countries.
