Dear Editor,
Thank you for publishing our first letter that we wrote to you more than a week ago with regards to the illegal squatting/land grabbing in the Vryheid’s Lust North community. Since that time we have had some action but the situation has got worse.
After the letter was published the woman continued to build and the husband was overheard by a number of persons as saying that if they have to move then others in the area will have to go.
People were advised to report the matter to the police. The NDC had a meeting which the Chairman, who is the brother of the woman putting up the illegal structure. At that meeting the woman was invited and was asked about the house lot that she was allocated at La Parfaite Harmonie and she calmly admitted that she sold it. This was shocking news since the law stipulates that you cannot sell a house lot that is allocated to you by the CH&PA. You have to sign an agreement when you purchase the house lot.
The woman was given a time frame to demolish the illegal structure. Nothing was done and a team was sent to dismantle the structure. The woman and her family prevented the dismantling by behaving in a very uncivilized and crude manner.
Chad Ramsarup from HGP Channel 67 was present and interviewed the woman. During all of this they continue to make threats of what they will do to the people in the area. Selected portions of the interview were featured in the Evening News of Channel 67 — nothing of the abusive and threatening behaviour was aired.
It should be noted that Chad Ramsarup is closely related to the woman. In the selected interview the woman claimed that the NDC collected taxes from her, allocated a lot number to the lot and was given permission to obtain water and electricity. She also claimed that she was given a letter by Nigel Hughes. She further claimed that the initial structure was a wooden one with an outside toilet and that during the construction to change the toilet the building collapsed hence the reason for the new structure. This is a blatant lie, the old structure never collapsed, it was dismantled.
Since all of the above mentioned the woman continues to build and has now extended the perimeter fence to occupy more of the government reserve.
This has now become a distinctive case of land grabbing. We wonder what the Region Chairman has to say about this now.
We are asking that our letter be published and we are publicly asking the Minister of Local Government, the CH&PA, Minister of Public Works and the Minister of Housing to urgently intervene in this matter and correct the wrong doing.
Thank you for your assistance in getting our problem publicized and we look forward from action from the relevant Ministers mentioned.
